Barbara Jean "Honey" Velek Piazza
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, February 11, 2013 in Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, Alexandria, LA with Father Dan O'Connor officiating. Interment will follow in Alexandria Memorial Gardens under the direction of John Kramer & Son Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2013 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and again on Monday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. A recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Barbara Jean "Honey" Velek Piazza, age 63, native of Alexandria passed away Thursday, February 7, 2013 in her home, in Abita Springs, LA.
She is preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Margaret Velek and her father-in-law Joseph "Jay" Piazza.
Barbara was an honor graduate for the class of 1967 at Bolton High School. She attended LSU and was an honor graduate in 1972 in the fields of Social Studies and Physical Education. Residing in Baton Rouge she taught school from 1972 to 1991; where she then moved to Fort Worth, TX in 1991 and taught Physical Education at St. Maria Goretti Catholic School until 2003. At the age of 51, she and her husband returned to Louisiana and resided in Money Hill Estates in Abita Springs, LA. Barbara was loved by all those who met her; with her zeal for life and love of children she never met a stranger. She was selfless, kind and giving. She loved to laugh, love and teach, always exemplifying the motto of "Living life to the fullest". Being a native of Louisiana and its southern culture she loved to cook and bake; and loved New Orleans and the Mardi Gras Holiday. As a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend she will be dearly missed.
Those left to cherish her memory include: her husband Chris P. Piazza, Sr.; her sons: Chris P. Piazza Jr. and life partner Brian Fussell, David Blake Piazza and wife Jamie Parks, Joseph Brett Piazza and wife Amy LeFaux; grandsons Keiran, Nathan, Nicolas, Britton and Nolan Piazza; her sibilings Jo Ann Doucet, Charolotte Pazon, Joseph Frank II, Debra Jane Velek, Paula Sue Anderson and Brenda Kay Roberts, her mother-in-law Bettie Piazza, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers honored to serve include: Rex Bent, Norbert Sutherland, Mike Piazza, Klause Fischer, Larry D. Floyd Sr. and Brandon Callahan. Honorary pallbearers include: Steven Lotspeich, Paul Piazza, Wayne Martin, Keiran Piazza, and Nathan Piazza.
The family would like to give special thanks to Barbara's caregivers: Ella McCormick, Pamela McKay, Shani Schexnayder, Jeff Bradshaw and the rest of Amedisys Hospice.
